“I’m not gonna allow the people I love most in the world to have less rights than anyone else,” said Whitmer. “That’s just not how we do things in Michigan.”

LANSING, Mich. — News came out Tuesday that Michigan Representative Josh Schriver plans to introduce a resolution urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, legislation that has protected the right to same-sex marriage since 2015.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer took to Facebook to release a video statement in response to Schriver’s planned resolution.
“In Michigan, everyone has the freedom to marry who they love,” Whitmer began the video. “It’s not only the law of the land, it’s a non-negotiable.”
Whitmer continued by saying that some “extreme” members of the Michigan Legislature are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn marriage equality.
“Here’s my response to that,” said Whitmer. “Hell no.”
“We fought a long hard fight to win marriage equality,” she said. “And we will always protect our family, our friends and neighbors from hateful attacks.”
She went on to say that nobody should be fired from their job or evicted from their home because of who they are or who they love, saying this is personal for her as well as many Michiganders.
“I’m not gonna allow the people I love most in the world to have less rights than anyone else,” said Whitmer. “That’s just not how we do things in Michigan.”
She ended the video by urging Michiganders to stand up for their values and “make Michigan a state that Michiganders can be proud to call home.”
Schriver’s resolution is set to be introduced on Tuesday. He posted a release about the resolution on X. The resolution claims Obergefell v. Hodges is “at odds with the sanctity of marriage, the Michigan Constitution and principles upon which the country was established.”
